Adjustment Counselor

Elementary School Counseling

There is one full time School Adjustment Counselor assigned to each elementary school in Scituate.  School Adjustment Counselors provide services to students, families, school staff and the community through direct and indirect services.   Direct services include the delivery of school counseling curriculum to all students, individual student planning, and responsive services (individual or small group counseling and crisis intervention).  Indirect services are provided on behalf of students and can include referrals to outside agencies or resources and consultation and/or collaboration with staff.  Working collaboratively with caregivers, students, faculty and administrators, School Adjustment Counselors help students identify and implement strategies in addressing issues ranging from academic performance and motivation to depression, anxiety, peer and family conflict and more.

In addition, the role of the elementary School Adjustment Counselor is to provide direct instruction in social and emotional skill development and Character Education curriculum.  In line with the Massachusetts Model for Comprehensive School Counseling (MASCA), the American School Counseling Association (ASCA), and the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), counselors are working with district administration to develop and implement a developmentally appropriate and culturally proficient continuum of Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum PK-5.

The Elementary School Adjustment Counselors are the team chairs and liaisons/case managers/service providers for Section 504 Plans in their respective school buildings.  They are active members of Student Support Teams, which create, implement and monitor timely intervention and support plans for struggling students.
